Debian 14 cds!!! and vhcs

I've started downloaded Debian for the first time, mainly because I want to install vhcs and it seems it installed the easiest on Debian.

I've noticed that its 14 CDs, why is that? Fedora is only 4. Is there a big difference?

Debian brings bucket-loads of packages. You may want to go looking for a Debian-based distro, with which you can install whatever you want just as easily, but will only be one CD. Suggestions: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Kanotix, Knoppix - in order of preference.

You can install it with just the first CD (or the netinstaller) and then use apt-get to get the rest of the packages you need from the internet.

Most of chanes you'll not need all of them!!!

First 3-4 give allmost all most useful packages. The rest rare packages you'll be able to download from internet.

I just use the net install. It won't take that long to download the packges you want. It is a big hasle to have to install from 14 cds anyway. First you have to insert all of the cds one by one, so that the installer knows which packages you have on the cds, then you have to reinsert from disc 1 to actually install the packages. You will probably end up saving time by just downloading. Trust me, it is not the same as installing fedora core.

If you have a DVD burner, I'd recommend getting the DVDs. I bought them off eBay for $1. I don't use packages from the second disc often (cds 8-14?), but a few of them are useful.
