Debian's font rendering

I noticed that default Debian fonts looks not as good as on Windows. I use recommended settings, Fonts: Enable anti-aliasing, Hinting: Full, Soft-pixel order: RGB. Is it normal, or it can be improved?

jim_p 09-25-2014 01:00 AM

I use this and it is ages ahead of any configuration

Does it replace default fonts or what? Can the default fonts be restored in case there is needs?

jim_p 09-26-2014 12:44 PM

No, it only affects how fonts are rendered. If you want better fonts, install microsoft's fonts.

How to install these .deb files?

jim_p 09-27-2014 12:36 AM

Did you build them yourself? Then a simple "dpkg -i file.deb" is enough.

EmaRsk 09-27-2014 04:07 AM

The debian package is 'ttf-mscorefonts-installer'.

these packages:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/106654446/in....4.9-1_all.deb

There are noted that's amd64 based packages. Is there packages for i386?

ondoho 09-27-2014 08:05 AM

imho, it's more about the (default) fonts you use then about settings.
installing ms fonts might indeed help.
other than that:

- play with the settings
- install and use infinality

it's basically one of those "what's the best XXX" questions - just try it all out, see what floats your boat. some people even like to use only bitmap fonts.

I placed .fonts.conf file into the user account 'home' folder, but didn't find a visible improvements.

My fonts render fine, and I don't do anything special to them.

with this .fonts.conf file? IMO, fonts on Windows looks much better.

In my experience the native Linux fonts on a new Debian install are ok but you are correct that they don't look as good as MS fonts if that is what you are used to. To get MS fonts you will need to enable non-free in your sources.list and then install the "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" package as suggested by EmaRsk in post 7.

No special files. I install Debian via debootstrap. Never do anything special to the fonts. Does anyone have a before and after screenshot?

op is refering to a link to debian wiki.
that fonts.conf is nothing special - it just enables font smoothing and hinting and subpixelrendering.
which usually already happens on a current gnu/linux install, so you might just as well remove the file.

several people now suggested this:
