Exclamation Deb.Buster: Configuring Nvidia GLX1070-maxQ(Laptop:GigaByte-Aero-15X)

Greetings everyone

Been trying to get a Xsession with the GTX1070(maxQ) for a while now, but no luck. The onboard Intel UHD 630 with i915 driver works fine with Xsession (gnome3).
Would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Info:
- Notebook: Gigabyte Aero 15xV8 (2 GPUs).
- Distribution, Buster-alpha5.
- Nvidia Video driver installation - I tried many different - 390.xx & 410.xx metapackages from the APT package manager. And i tried with bumblebee, no luck.
Currently i have installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-418.43.run driver.
(This one actually gets me to the graphical login screen and then stalls).
- Debian Buster oob does not boot to X-desktop, but if I disable discrete graphics in BIOS it does.
- I have a blacklist-nouveau.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ with 'blacklist nouveau'.

More:
- It seems where the joy always ends is where the x-server exits with:
Code:
[ 426.003] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
- That happens when i let the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-418.43.run installation (or the APT-package nvidia-xconfig) make a /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or I try my own hand at it).
If I run without xorg.conf I get Xsession, but it switches to onboard GPU.

I will try to post some info here for debugging:

Hi Linus72

Thank you for your reply.

The links in your 2nd post, I have worked through them before posting here on LQ. It didn't make it work for me.
Not to say that I haven't missed something.

About trying another kernel. Yes why not :-)
Something might be configured different in that.

Apart from that I could of course try an ubuntu installation on another partition. I think I saw someone having my hardware who got it up and running Xsession on the GTX1070 card. Then from that I might figure out, how to make it work on Debian.

Otherwise I feel that my in depth knowledge about setting up screen etc is now what I am missing. After all, perhaps the probed settings without xorg.conf might be slightly off. And in my own xorg.conf, perhaps some option I am missing, or having too much.

Other suggestions are very welcome

You can run the command below while in a graphical environment, it'll create a xorg.conf.new in /root, maybe it'll produce something different, I think it has to be run as root or sudo.
Code:
# Xorg :2 -configure
The one below would need to be run without an x-session like single user mode or runlevel 3
Code:
# Xorg :0 -configure

I have tried installing ubuntu 18.1 on another partition.
Indeed the Nvidia GTX1070 GPU works with X-session there.
In the desktop utility Nvidia-settings you can also switch to the onboard GPU (requires log-out/log-in).

However since there is no xorg.conf I cant spy on that how they make things happen.

If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction.
What exact information would be useful for me from the ubuntu installation to make my debian installation work ?

Thanks

Have you tried looking in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d ?

I've had battles with nvidia myself. Here's some possible tips, this system doesn't have nvidia so I can't be absolute specific. What ever it takes to start X and use nvidia-settings. Click preview - save to xorg.conf (you don't want to actually save!) Here's where I copiy the nvidia specific parts to a new file and saved it (as root) for example /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-nvidia.conf If that gives you a battle there's also nvidia-xconfig It creates an xorg.conf in /root home which you can copy and paste from.

I'm not certain on the specifics on the details, in the section screen you list it to use both graphic devices?

In your post when you claim "I got, (nothing new)" after Xorg :2 -configure you now have Driver "nouveau" instead of Driver "nvidia" and instead of device0 / device1 you have card0 / card1

Hi again djk44883, (and everyone else).

Still no luck

I did, and found on Ubuntu the files: 10-nvidia.conf & 11-nvidia-prime.conf
Code:
Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/xorg"
EndSection
Code:
# DO NOT EDIT. AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED BY gpu-manager
Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "Nvidia Prime"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT"
    Option "PrimaryGPU" "Yes"
    ModulePath "/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/xorg"
EndSection
and on Debian /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
Code:
Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"

I put a bit of it into my /etc/X11/xorg.conf which now looks like this:

@djk44883, this puzzled me, preview what?
Quote:
What ever it takes to start X and use nvidia-settings. Click preview - save to xorg.conf (you don't want to actually save!)
Note: Inspired by the xorg.conf produced by the command:
Code:
# Xorg :2 -configure
I have changed the layout of my present xorg.conf, so that I now have 2 GPU-device sections and 2 screen sections. Not that it has made a difference.
As I understand the words Card0 or Device0 are just names that the conf-file uses to link the different sections correctly together.
The nouveau driver is a bit of a hardlived ghost. It appears in /var/log/Xorg.?.log if I start the xserver without xorg.conf file. But it doesn't load because I have it blacklisted.
As I see it the 'Xorg :2 -configure' command only does basic stuff. It picked up the nouveau driver instead of nvidia ?

So I'm still stuck with only onboard graphics, or Ubuntu, which I would like to avoid. I feel more at home with debian, even though im no shark at it.

Here are the parts of /var/log/Xorg.0.log (whith above xorg.conf) that I find most interesting:
