Custom 2.6.1 kernel with GRUB not loading.

Nor an apt-got kernel-image-2.6.0-1-686
I made the 2.6.1 kernel with make-kpkg then dpkg -i the new kernel image. I then configured GRUB to point to the new kernel, and it doesn't work. I select the kernel from the GRUB menu, then the screen flashes, then goes to and stays at a blank, black screen, whereas selecting the stock bf2.4 kernel will load up with my nifty Tux in the upper left hand corner. Here's my grub menu.lst:
# Generated by grubconf-0.5

title Debian GNU/Linux 2.4.18-bf24
#:0 <-- type: 0 => linux, 1 => windows, 2 => other
	root (hd0,0)
	kernel /vmlinuxes/vmlinuz-2.4.18-bf2.4 root=/dev/hda2 hdc=ide-scsi vga=792 console=ttys0
title Debian GNU/Linux 2.6.1 Custom
#:0 <-- type: 0 => linux, 1 => windows, 2 => other
	root (hd0,0)
	kernel /vmlinuxes/vmlinuz-2.6.1 root=/dev/hda2 hdc=ide-scsi vga=792 console=ttys0

Maybe the 2.6 kernel wasn't compiled with framebuffer support (framebuffer consoles are crap anyway - use X for your pretty graphics). Try removing the "vga=792" kernel option for the 2.6 kernel and see if that works. If you want a 2.6 kernel with fb support, you may have to compile it yourself.

EDIT: btw, you don't need the option hdx=ide-scsi if you have the latest versions of cdrtools and cdrdao. Change it to hdx=ide-cdrom. You may also have to change /etc/fstab.
