corrupt file Permission denied

ok, so this is a first for me.

problem -
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/artsbuilder_4%3a3.5.9-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
unable to stat `./usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/artsbuilder/images/Gui_SLIDER.png' (which I was about to install): Permission denied

so now check out these file permissions -
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? Gui_SLIDER.png
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? Gui_SUBPANEL.png

any one have any idea how to get rid of these, or to change the mods and owner?

what i've done-

hestia:/home/chad# chown root:root /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/artsbuilder/images/Gui_SLIDER.png
chown: cannot access `/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/artsbuilder/images/Gui_SLIDER.png': Permission denied

all with the same error -
chmod
rm -rf
shred

created file of the same name and moved it didn't change.

anyone??

it's messing up my upgrade.
cheers

Try mounting your partition with /usr read-only (maybe from liveCD) and run fsck on the partition. If the partition is / and /home is also there, you'd better back it up first. And in any case, read man fsck.

You can boot a live cd or a regular cd(an go to a shell). Then run fsck on the partition. If the filesystem is clean, chmod in your real linux partition and finish the installation.
