Copying Partition?

Hi,

Few weeks ago I tried to copy my debian partition into another partition (from hda2 to hda1), because I wanted to move my debian to the first partition, with command cp -r. After I changed the grub configuration (menu.lst), I can boot into my hda1. But I found something strange, it is like I just symlink the partition, so, for example if I delete the files in my hda2 partition, the same file in the hda1 partition were also deleted. I also deleted an importand directory under the root directory (but I don't remember the exact directory), so had to reinstall my debian. But I still do not know why, is that the default behaviour when I copy one partition to another partition? Can anybody explain to me?

Thanks

you should use ghost or some other partition type application to dupe partitions.

Thank you for your reply,

Ooopss, I've done a stupid action. Btw, are there any other similar programs that work in Linux instead of Norton Ghost that run in Windows?

Thanks....

well ghost runs in DOS.
and yes there are linux based apps that you can make boot disks that will clone disks and partitions.

Easiest is this:
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
The ultimate boot cd, look for a program called g4u (ghost for unix) that should do the trick.
