Plug the Debian box into your router via a cat5 (ethernet) cable?

Your question really doesn't make much sense, sorry.

1. What is your basic network setup; do you use a router or a hub/switch?
2. If you've installed just the basic system you will more than likely need to install a few other packages.
3. If you are on a router which assigns IPs dynamically (through DHCP), run /sbin/ifconfig eth0 to see if your networking is up. NOTE: If your networking isn't alive, your ethernet card will still have an IP address, but it will be a statically-set one.

From a shell you could do a few tests to verify Internet connectivity..

Try to resolve some Internet doman names..
Code:
mhepler@it-etch:~$ dig www.google.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> www.google.com
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 12023
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 4, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.google.com. IN A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.google.com. 21799 IN CNAME www.l.google.com.
www.l.google.com. 300 IN A 64.233.167.99
www.l.google.com. 300 IN A 64.233.167.147
www.l.google.com. 300 IN A 64.233.167.104

OK so DNS resolution is working.. lets see if we can browse the internet

aptitude update
aptitude install lynx
lynx www.google.com

Code:
                                                               Google (p2 of 2)

Yep Web browsing works.. so Internet connectivity is definitely working..

You need to work on your questions though, not sure if this is what you were asking or not..
