Connecting to Internet using Router

Hi there,

I recently installed Debian and I'm new to Linux, although I have quite good knowledge of computers. My question is concerning the internet connection. I tried Mandrake 10 and Fedora Core 2 before, and they automatically configured my internet connection. I think I have to do it manually. My setup is as follows. I use a Router with internal IP address of 192.168.123.254 and it is connected to my eth0 port. I already installed the SiS 900 ethernet module into kernel, so it is working. I really don't know how to use ifconfig and route commands, I guess these are what I need. I'm sure the solution is straightforward, I just could not figure it out.

Additional info is as follows

I can see my IP address provided by my ISP. (Which I choose not to provide) Also, Windows XP assigns me an internal IP address 192.168.123.0 (I don't know if it is assigned by XP, I'm not a network wiz)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

debian networking:

my final post at the bottom includes a link, and some overkill on how to config your system.

and FYI:
your router is running a DHCP server, which assigns IP addresses to connected clients, ie your router gave you the IP, not windows
