Configuring courier-imap courier-pop

am configuring a mail server using courier-imap courier-pop for clients
to retrieve mail off the server. Most everything seems to be working. The server is receiving mail, and is properly spooling it by username in /var/mail. My local client email program can log into the server and log into and out of user accounts. The problem is that the client fails to retrieve the mail. It's as if it can log into everyplace it needs to log into, but for whatever reason is unable to find the mail for the user it logs in for. It does the same thing for every test user that I create on the server. Is there a config file that I need to edit on the server that tells clients where to find their mail? Any comments or ideas on what the problem is are invited.
