.config setup for no initrd


just how do you configure the kernel (2.6.8) so that initrd is not necessary?

Make sure that the support for your filesystem (e.g., ext3) is compiled into the kernel. It cannot be a module. Also, make sure that your harddrive drivers are compiled into the kernel (for me it's IDE and the Intel chipset). You could use lspci to see what you might have.

Do some trial an error. If you get a kernel panic when you boot, something is wrong...

thank you so much.....i now have it working satisfactory....

is there an advantage in not using initrd.img?
