Just now, I had a second profile of Firefox running and I restarted (with an extension) my first Firefox profile. When the first FF profile began to open, the computer froze again. A forced log out (Ctrl Alt Backspace) and trying a virtual terminal both did nothing - as usual hitting the Desktop's physical reset button was the only option. These freezes now happen a few times a week. VLC was not running in many of these freezes. Maybe some system files are corrupt or there's a problem with x11?

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I'm using the Debian Backport Kernel? Currently is 4.14.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 here.

It turns out the backport kernel was the issue after all. The standard Stretch kernel does not causes crashes/freezes.
