Compiz kde debian sid install

Just installed compiz and compiz fusion from the debian sid repos. My nvidia card is supported so I should be ready to go.
It's kinda hard to find any recent docs about how to get it going though. Is it still needed to edit xorg.conf (no problem but is it needed). Futhermore I read about the shame repo for compiz fusion. Is this still the way to go or should I just use the onces in Sid repos?

Btw is there still any use in installing Compiz and Compiz-fusion now Kde4 is getting ready? It seems that Kde4 already has a lot of effects...

Regards

So far as I can remember, a few months back http://shame.tuxfamily.org didn't have much detailed guide for installing Compiz-Fusion on Debian. But recently they have added one here.

The instructions seem neat.

I haven't yet installed Compiz-Fusion on my system but I'm working on it (planning to install on my Gnome, though).

As long as your xorg.conf is correctly setup for your card I don't think you should need to edit it.

I have always added this at the end of xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Extensions"
	Option "Composite"	"1"
EndSection
And this in the "Device" section:
Code:
	Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"	"1"
After a reinstall of my distro I installed compiz fusion but realised I had forgotten to modify xorg.conf and to my suprise everything was working fine without the above changes.

Whether or not you choose to use it over KDE's effects is purely down to personal preference.
In my opinion KDE's effects pale in comparison to fusion's effects and are likely to lag behind for some time yet.

As for which repo to use, again it's down to personal preference.

My packages are based on git so are potentially more unstable (git is usually pretty stable these still days) and can break at any time.
Sid's packages are based on the latest official release.

The only big difference really is that my repo has an extra package "compiz-fusion-plugins-unstable" which is a collection of extra plugins that are not quite ready for git, usually many of them are still in the early stages of development.

Most of them aren't that spectacular but there are some really good ones (especially atlantis2, anaglyph and elements, I think they alone are worth the extra hassle).

So basically, if you just want the easiest and simplest way to get compiz fusion effects then stick with the official Sid one, if you want the extra plugins and the latest stuff and are prepared to go the extra step of adding my repo and such then why not?

Thanks Shame for making your packages available. They have been very stable for me anyway, maybe a crash a month (except when I try to use ghost that crashes it every time, can't wait till that plugin becomes stable).
