compiz ati and xgl

I'm trying out compiz, and I have a fglrx card on my laptop. I installed all the packages aptitude wanted to install when I typed 'aptitude install compiz'. The card is an 'ATI Radeon X1200 Series'. It didn't work. I did some googling and found out my card isn't supported, but the info I read says I need to have xgl to make it work. What's xgl, and can I download it? I searched with my package manager and found no mention of an xgl package. The fglrx driver works for my card.

I can run glxgears, and I get approximately 493 FPS. If I type "compiz --replace" the screen flashes and I see:
Code:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
If I "dmesg | grep fglrx" I see this for every time I've tried that command('compiz --replace') :
Code:
[fglrx] PCIe has already been initialized. Reinitializing ...
[fglrx] GART Table is not in FRAME_BUFFER range
[fglrx] Reserve Block - 0 offset = 0Xbffb000 length = 0X5000
[fglrx] Reserve Block - 1 offset = 0X0 length = 0X1000000
THANKS!!

Thanks for the link. Here's a problem. Alot of the guides I read speak about using a command called 'Xgl' along with a string of complicated command line options... in a shell script. I don't have a problem with the shell script part, but I don't have an 'Xgl' on my system. I don't know what to do. Thanks again for any replies.

I think my card just isn't up to the task. Brian1, thanks for your help, though. I downloaded a version of 'xserver-xgl' from ubuntu, and a newer version of compiz from shame's repo, but could not get them to work... then I found a list of cards that compiz supports and mine isn't on it. Maybe when the software has matured a little I'll try again. Thanks again.
