Compiling Kernel Issues

I'm trying to compile debian-sources-2.6.8, and when I run 'make-kpkg -rev Custom.1 kernel_image', I get quite a few unresolved symbol errors. I'm upgrading to that kernel because the default 2.2.20 kernel doesn't come with support for the NForce ethernet cards, so right now it doesn't have internet access either.

I'm not sure, but I think it's impossible to get the 2.6.8 source and compile in on a 100% woody system. (the module-init-tools etc must be too old etc?)

Hi Prometheus,

If I were you, I would do this:
Most Debian users don't compile kernels. Debian make it for us.
You've got to see what is in store.
#apt-get update
#apt-cache seach kernel-image
choose something working for you processor (386, 686 or k7 for amd)
then # apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.XX (XX for the choosen version)

Good luck, Marc A

True and not true. Debian does provide a (normally) perfectly working kernel easily installable by the apt-get system. A lot of Debian user do compile their own kernel though (the debian way or the 'normal' way). Big advantage of doing it yourself is that you can leave out whatever you don't need and creating a faster and smaller kernel. A nice how-to can be found here:

Creating custom kernels with Debian's kernel-package system

Works very nicely for 2.6.x kernels aswell.

Good luck
