Compile kernel error

Im trying a custom kernel on my new duo core laptop but it fails .

i used this guide here http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21

the image plus its initrd are created fine but kernel stops at boot.

The strange is that i get the config from /boot from the kernel Debian is shpping
with and i change only the cpu type to core duo then i create the image but still fails so its not my missfigured options.

Here and there i read about disabling the one core and proceed kernel compilation but

i dont know if this is the error. For the record its stops after recognizing the CD-ROM

its a Toshiba Tecra A8

First, I should say, I didn't completely understand your post. That being said, it seems as if your kernel install is failing or not being completed. First, I would recommend you go to http://www.linux-laptop.net to see if someone has already done most of the legwork for your particular machine. If so, you should download the .config file into your build directory (should be /usr/src/linux). Then you can simply use
Code:
make oldconfig
to update the config you downloaded to the kernel you downloaded. What happens next many people will say differently but I've been using
Code:
make dep clean bzImage install modules modules_install
for years across multiple hardware platforms and never had an issue. These steps should ensure you have a properly configured and installed kernel. IF there is still a problem, 51% or more of the time the kernel will give some sort of indication what the problem is. If that is the case, make sure you post that information here when you come back and let us know whether this worked for you or not. Good Luck!!

[Solved]

Those who own Toshiba Tecra A8 series laptops should

compile their kernel with
<*> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers --->

and specifically
<*> Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support
