I am currently using firestarter as my firewall. I ran nmap and noticed that ports for ssh, smtp, rpcbind, auth and sift-uft are open. I am not sure what rpcbind, auth and sift-uft are but I know what ssh is and believe that smtp is for mail. I would like to be able to close as many of these as possible. I do not plan on anybody using ssh to log into my system and the only mail I will be checking is my web based email accounts. So I would appreciate any explanation of how I can close some of these ports that I may not need.

Scanning from your own machine? If so go to GRC choose the Shields Up option then scan the ports from there.
Are you using ssh to log into other machines or are you using it to log into your own machine from other places. If you only want ssh to log into other machines you can remove the ssh package which contains both the ssh client and the ssh server. The client package is under openssh-client. Bind is from the Bind9 which can be removed (at least it worked for me) and just install bind9-host. If you open up synaptic you can take a look at the packages and some descriptions. Hope this helps.
