Closing laptop lid stops computer

I have a Dell Latitude D505. I installed Squeeze on 12 November 2011 from the weekly DVD. I install updates every day, when available.
My kernel: 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 18:43:34 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid.
Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev"
I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. I did everything suggested in that thread, but nothings helps.
When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too.
It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.
Can somebody help me out, it's so anoying when u close your laptop and than everything is gone and you have to put it off. It's not good commercial for my favorite distro Debian also.

What's your graphics card? And what is set as default option when you close the lid?

Will you create another user and report if anything is different then?

And please post a direct link to the thread you've mentioned.

Are you using GNOME or some other DE?

Graphics card: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Intergrated Graphics Device
Different user created, effect the same
Gnome and LXDE same effect.
Any option suspend, blank screen and hibernate. It doesn't matter.
Not closing the lid suspend, blank screen, hibernate function normally.
When I suspend the machine and close the lid, when I open it it comes out of suspend, no problem.

I'm still facing the problem how to close my laptop when it is on. So my cat won't jump on it when I get something to drink. I don't want to put it in suspend because all my running calculations will than stop. Please, is there somebody who can solve this problem.

I tried several times to compile myself a new kernel to solve this problem. But every time grub couldn't find my hard disk, but setting looks ok.
Today i downloaded "linux-image-2.6.32-26-generic_2.6.32-26.48_i386.deb" from Ubuntu Lucid updates. One dependency missing "wireless-crda_1.12_i386.deb".
First I installed the wireless-crda with Gdebi followed by the linux-image. This was for me really the solution. I'm not happy that i have to get some Ubuntu stuff in my Debian machine, but it does the trick. Finally I can close and open my laptop when ever I like and my laptop will function properly after I do so.

Problem solved!

I hope Debian Squeeze is coming with a newer kernel soon.
