It's possible that the drive is at fault. I've got a bunch of DVD writers of different brands. It disappoints me how many cannot write an ISO image without errors. The only "brand" that seems to be reliable is TSST. I don't think you can purchase this brand directly. Both of my Toshiba notebook computers have this brand, and I have an external DVD writer with the brand name "Mad Dog" that shows up in Linux as a TSST brand drive. All of these TSST drives work great. On the other hand my Sony, Plextor, and Ricoh drives are all unreliable. I should say that they are reliable insofar as they reliably fail to write a good image to disk.

The TSST letters stand for Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, and something else.

Weird issue! I prefer using k3b to burn CDs on my Debian Etch box. Did you try turning down your burn rate a bit?

That's a good idea.

Check the /boot/grub/menu.lst to see if ubuntu uses [hs]d[?]=ide-scsi with the ide-scsi module loaded.
Might be worth a try anyway, or if it's already there in etch, try without it.
I'm not actually sure if power calibration is needed for burning. Personally I use cdrecord from sarge on a sid box. Had some problems with the newer one (wodim) so I downgraded and have held it since. Wish I remembered what the problem was, must've been ~2 years ago though.
