cd/dvd writer K3b

Hi all,
I have a plextor(PX-708A) cd/cdrw/dvdrw burner and so far it will read a cdrom but after installing, cdrdao, and cdrecord, and k3b when I open K3b it complains it cannot find an executable for cdrdao and cdrecord..Yet they are both installed..
My question is , does anyone have a working cd/dvd burner and if so how did you do it..
I have tried uninstalling all and reinstalling but that did not help..
Do I need to edit my /etc/fstab or is it a permissions problem? The drive is 660 and both cdrdao and cdrecord are 0750..
Thank you,
jolphil(slowly but surely getting this OS working)Whew!!

Hi,

First I am far from an expert.

Have you tried it as root?

If it works in root, it is probably a permission problem.

I put Deb Sarge on my current machine. DVD burner. I had to add my user name to the group cdrom, if I remember correctly. Other than that it was all automatically done.

In Kb3 go to setting->Options->Programs and see if cdrdao, and cdrecord are listed there if not click on search and see if Kb3 finds them.

Good news and bad news..
I took your suggestions and ran k3b as root..I gave a different error and said I needed "dvd+r tools'
so I installed that and from root was able to burn a cdrom..
Then I tried from UID and it shows the sam two errors.."Unable to find cdrecord executable" and" unable to find cdrdao executable"... Both are installed so it must be a permission problem(I guess)..
Next thing is how to get K3b working from User..
Thanks for your help...One more step upward..

What kernel are you using?

I just had to 'adduser <user> cdrom' to get mine working. If it complains there is no group then 'addgroup cdrom' first. http://debianlinux.net/~jama/howto/c...ing_steps.html

Here is a link that tells how to use k3b setup. I've never done that. Supposed to be very easy though.

Check your K3b version and kernel.
Kernel 2.6.9 and above needs K3b version 0.11.18 or better
to run as normal user.
Current K3b is 0.11.22.

Thank You for your helpful replies..i am going away for a few days but I will try it as soon as I get back..
Jolphil

Edit..Kernel Linux 2.6.8-1-386
K3b 0.11.20.1

I am using KIIIB on SuSe and it seems to work great.
