cannot use gcc even though it's installed.

I have GCC on my debian machine and I'd like to use it for a programming course I'm taking. typing gcc or g++ does not work and when I try a search for them, I get nothing, even as root. What do I need to do?

Hmm... strange. gcc is in the gcc package I have, in /usr/bin/gcc. As for g++, do you have the g++ package installed?

$ dpkg -l g++

whereis gcc
it should be in "/usr/bin." you could try "/usr/bin/gcc" to invoke it. if that doesn't work, gcc is not installed, so install it.

su -c "apt-get install gcc g++"
