Cannot shutdown as user on kde debian

Since I installed the kde release of debian etch, I have to use "su" to shutdown (su, then halt)... or sudo. But what I want is a button to turn it off, or something along those lines...

KDE provides one, but it doesn't work... If I try it that way (log-of > turn off computer) it just closes kde and my computer stays on, with the localhost username prompt.

What can I do to fix this?

Kernel = 2.6.18-5-686

Open your Control Centre (or do Alt & F2 type kcontrol) goto System Administration--> Login Manager, click on the Shutdown tab and check to see who is authorised to issue the shutdown command. It needs to be set to Everybody in the section Allow Shutdown--> Local.
