Cannot play any DVD in Debian Wheezy
 

Hi,
Maybe someone can help me please? After tried install Blu-Ray codecs I cannot play any DVD on my Debian Wheezy.

What Blu-ray codecs did you try to install? Can you post the steps that you took? Before installing the blu-ray codecs did DVD playback work fine?

Thank you for replay and link to codecs. I reinstalled all multimedia codecs and DVD working fine now on VLC or Totem Gnome but unfortunately one of the best multimedia Kaffeine software don't want play any video (divix, dvd) just blank screen.

Are you sure it's a codec issue? VLC is the only player I know that will play everything I throw at it. Totem wont and I have never tried Kaffeine. Also what are you trying to play DVD or Blu-Ray? Your have inadvertently contradicted yourself.

OK I will try explain again my issue with DVD.

I'm using Debian Wheezy Sid on my amazing Lenovo X200 with Lenovo ThinkPad X200 UltraBase Docking station and here I found general problem to play dvd's.

After reading Sycamorex post (Thank you for it) about http://wiki.debian.org/MultimediaCodecs I deleted KDE software (Krusader, ARename, Kaffaine) in my Gnome GUI and other video software related with previous codec installation.

I installed all codecs from deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org wheezy main non-free
w32codecs, libdvdcss2 and others: vlc, mozilla-mplayer, gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3, ffmpeg, sox, twolame, vorbis-tools, lame, faad.

I installed all software (KDE and Gnome) which I used before.

So finally I get success and DVD start play on VLC or Totem but not in KDE Kaffeine. In Kaffeine I have black screen when I trying play any video or DVD.

Second issue. I tried play DVD on my Blu-Ray 9.5 mm (Matshita BD-RE UJ242) and unfortunately not working. I can burn CD, DVD, Blu-Ray 25GB! but unfortunately cannot play DVD.

So this is situation which I get actually on my Debian. Any help will be v e r y appreciate!!!

can you explain pls?

which packages did you install for your alsa?

2) I have not used kde stuff for yonks...I prefer xfce but kde likes phonon so check those settings pls and some kde distros have added a layer of complexity called pulseaudio so check if that is set up if you prefer to use it.

I would Google the actual drive that you are having issues with.

As for Kaffeine make sure you have the various xine plugins installed, and that it is using xine as a backend and not phonon.

Haven't tried kaffeine since kde3.5, smplayer works and it can download subtitles.

Checked now. I have already installed Phonon Xine 1.1.x backend. Kaffeine works fine before, also I'm using this player for my USB D-TV.

How to check that Kaffeine is using xine as a backend and not phonon?

I'm using Gnome 2 on Debian Wheezy and Kaffeine works fine before. I'm sure that I missing some packages which has been auto uninstantiated after libdvdcss2 re-installation.

I keep note about all uninstalled packages but cannot establish which are necessary to proper Kaffeine behaviour. The worst thing is that Kaffeine player cannot play at all. How to check pulseaudio? I'm using ALSA which has been default installed by Debian Wheezy.

2) I not have installed pulsaudio, so I installed now and rebooting system...

Well after installing Pulseaudio I lost all sound in system. Do I must restart system to run Pulseaudio server?
My default sound manager is HDA Intel (Alsa mixer). Do I need Pulseaudio to run Kaffeine?

I installed Pulseaudio sound manager but I lost sound in system. After change in /home/slav/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config

I can see f.e. avi video for circa 1 sek. and after got Kaffeine message: Audio device unavailable.

But what's interesting is when I save in su xine-config and back again it's not saved.

These guys also have issue with video in Kaffeine on Debian Wheezy. It's not first time in tested distro application stop working. I had before issue with remmina but has been fixed in new updates. I think that I have only one choice to wait for new update packages which fixed Kaffeine video issue.

How I wrote before in forum has been manually modified file ~/.kde.share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config

Kaffeine working fine now with amy format video including DVD.

Still I have issue to play DVD and BD discs from Blu-Ray but this is separate chapter. I would like to test Blu-Ray drive with another distro. Suppose that is firmware issue.
