Cannot install graphics interface for Debian

Hello im a linux newbie :)

I have a problem installing the graphics interface for Debian. I have installed everything from the begining. The kernel boots but i get to a terminal environment.

I have installed the x-window-system-core and did the configuration but prop i did something wrong.
How can i have a graphics environment?

I have a desktop computer with AMD processor 1700+
Graphics adapter: Nvidia Geforce 6600
Screen: a CRT NEC FE700+

Any ideas of what to do?

Try "aptitude install xorg gnome gdm"

And if it complains that you already have the latest package, try "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" as root (w/o the " marks :p).

In other words switch to root and then type "apt-get install xorg". You can then try "startx" afterwards and if you get something graphical then you might want to do "apt-get install gdm". You can use kdm instead of gdm. After that install gnome or kde.

An important question ?

What Debian are you using ? Because Sarge dosent use the same X systeam that Etch and Sid does, Sarge uses Xfree86 and Etch and Sid uses Xorg.

Well If you are using Etch or Sid you may do

#apt-get install xorg* xserver-xorg*

I hope you solve this problem, after you install all this packages you may want to install:

#apt-get install kdm kde

This will take a while, about hours ! But you-ll see the results ;)

Nahh, only minutes here... But then: I have broadband internet access :p Besides, I wouldn't choose KDE, I'm a Gnomy ;)

Hehe ok, well in that case you know what to do

#apt-get install gnome gdm*

I hope you tell us if you already solved the problem.

I'm already working in a Gnome GUI, but hopefully the TS will succeed as well :)
