cannot change cursor theme under wheezy

hi

I have wheezy with Gnome and try to change the cursor colour from black to white, but it doesn't work.
I have xcursor-themes and dmz-cursor-theme installed and if I try to set:
Code:
# update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
There are 6 choices for the alternative x-cursor-theme (providing /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme).

  Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
* 0            /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme   90        auto mode
  1 /etc/X11/cursors/core.theme 30 manual mode
  2 /etc/X11/cursors/handhelds.theme 20 manual mode
  3 /etc/X11/cursors/redglass.theme 20 manual mode
  4 /etc/X11/cursors/whiteglass.theme 20 manual mode
  5 /usr/share/icons/DMZ-Black/cursor.theme 30 manual mode
  6 /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme 90 manual mode

Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: 6
nothing happens, even after restart.

That is changing the theme system-wide, yet you must have a setting in your home directory that is over-riding it.

Make a new user, log-in and see what cursor it is using.

Start the Appearance program from your Settings menu and try to change it from there.

+1 on that.

I use the old crystalgreen animated pointer. Don't think it is available real easily anymore even. Have it on every thing from Squeeze to Sid using the gui with no trouble.
