Can start the X Windows in Debian

Hi all,

I downloaded the new Debian Installer version (3.1), later I can install the base system and then base config running, I choose install the Desktop Environment and other DNS Server ... etc. And it downloaded 5xxMB files from the FTP.

But ... later, after I config the X Config, I don't know what part of wrong, after back to the console, I enter "startx", a very quickly text fresh, later, it tell me something Error, so the X Windows can't start, I don't understand the text tell me what is wrong, so I post the log file here.

My system:
Asus A7V133-C MB
768MB PC133 SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 with 64MB RAM
Sony SDM-HS73 LCD

here are the /var/log/XFree86.0.log content, who can teach me how to reconfig XFree 86 again, need enter what command in the console?

Needa install yer XFree86-fb(frame buffer) binaries there bud. But besides that, you'll need to install
the nvidia drivers from nvidia.com. It's easy as pie. Just make sure you have the kernel-source installed
beforehand.

Thx for answer my questions.

But, how to install the kernal source, how to install it?

Enter apt-get kernal?

and where can install the XFree86-fb or find it?

using apt-get XFree86-fb?

I think the problem is because of the DRI interface you are using. Donot load the module 'dri' (comment this line in /etc/X11/XF86Config) file.

"(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:

This means the X is badly configured

#apt-get install discover mdetect read-edid

Reconfigure it again:

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

follow the instructions from:

Sections 9 and 10
http://osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016

Edit: also install x-window-system if you haven't yet.

First either dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and de-select the option UseFBDev or whatever it is called in there or you can edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and comment out (put a # at the start of the line) Option "UseFBDev" "true" that is what is causing you the problem. To get your kernel source apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.26 then in the /usr/src directory tar -xvjf kernel-source-2.4.26.tar.bz2 if the file ends in a .gz then use -xvzf in the line to extract the file now you would [i]ln -s kernel-source-2.4.26 linux[i] to link the source tree to the linux directory which the Nvidia installer will expect to be there. You may want to post the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 you are using if you have more problems.

Thx for all,

Now, after I run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" (Haven't run the apt-get install discover mdetect read-edid before on this step) to reconfigure the X again,
the X-Windows worked, but still have some problems appeared, it is the GDM, now after I enter "startx" , it show me the X Windows is KDE, not is the Gnome, for some personal reason, I like the Gnome more than KDE, I want to switch from KDE to Gnome, how to?

I try reboot the system, after that, it pop up a box that told me, my X Windows have problems, and the GDM now is disable auto, and then bring me to the text base console, but after I enter startx again, it bring me to the KDE again, I then logout, enter "gdm", it show me the gdm is running, I try it again and again, include reconfigure the X Windows, still not solve can't switch to Gnome problems and the GDM pop up error, I don't understand why, since it can bring me to the KDE, it is mean my X Windows can work yet

here are my setting file of XF86Config-4

# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
