Can only log in as root user?!?!

I run debian woody, kernel 2.4.25 and i recently upgraded via apt-get... since i upgraded and restarted i cna only log into my root account. I thought that maybe there was a problem with my normal account, after trying the other accounts and getting the same problem i'm not sure what to do. I even moved my things out of my normal account and recreated it.. still the same problem.

i sign in at the xdm thingy with my name and passwd , the screen clicks as if its going in and then i end up back at the first screen.

Can anyone help??? I'm totally lost. I've googled and yahoo'd to find something that might help, but alas i've found nothing.

If it's a problem in starting X (I mean, if you can log in as normal user from console), then
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common
might be the command that fixes your problem.

eviltama 05-03-2004 06:46 AM

i ran that but nothing came of it. :(

Nothing? Do you mean that running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common" just dumped you back to commandline with no output?

It should have given you the option to "Select what type of user has permission to start X server", where you could have chosen "Anybody". If it really didn't didn't give you this kind of output, then maybe you need to run "dpkg-reconfigure debconf" first, and select "Dialog" as your interface. (If the problem prevails even after selecting "Dialog", try selecting "Readline" interface instead.)

eviltama 05-03-2004 07:55 AM

no i ran it, and i choose 'anybody' but nothing changed. i still can't get in.

andmalc 05-03-2004 12:35 PM

I suppose you could try disabling the graphical login on boot by renaming the S??xdm entry in /etc/rc2.d, rebooting into a console session and logging in as your regular user, and then running xdm from there. At least that way you'll see if there's a problem logging in at the console which would certainly explain not getting in to X.

Hey - if you get really frustrated, you could reinstall using the just released beta version of the new Installer:
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

This will give you a sarge system.

BTW, reinstalling is always easier if you have your /home in it's own partition.

Eviltama
I had the same problem a few days ago. I had been using sysV-init editor to stop some services and had stopped /etc/init.d/rmnologin by mistake, after I put it back all was well again.
Hope this is of some use
