Can anyone help me redetect my mouse?

I have installed the Knoppix/Debian CD to hard drive. All was fine, I have done this before and no problems. However, using Synaptic I updated the distribution and now my USB mouse wil not work. I have checked the hardware in Info Center and the mouse is recognised but it will not work. Can anyone tell me how I can re enable it? Thanks.
