canīt hear sounds or see any plugable or mountable devices ...

Ok, here it goes. I installed the stable Debian distro at my home starting at a 2.4.27-speakup kernel. Later I installed gdm and when it was up and running the first thing I did was to check I was a member of the cdrom, plugdev and audio groups. I already was in each case. After I mounted in fstab my other Windowīs partitions (sadly for software like Dreamweaver and Flash) I tried to mount my sda1 device so I could see my flash drive. But nothing. I insert a cd and in order to see it on my Desktop I have to mount it also with my flash device, oh and no sound for that matter. Everytyme I try to playback something it gives me an error about not configured sound devices. I upgraded to a 2.6.8 kernel to see it these problems would vanish but nothing, can anyone plz advise?

Thanks,

P.S I tried looking for some help around the forum area but itīs too crowded, maybe it would be better to centralize the information in a way users like me donīt have to post this, surely repeated, problem. thanks again

Checkout post-install config at top of forum list and Debian tips and tricks(google). Knowing what sound card u use wd help--As root run apt-get install alsa alsa-base alsa-utils then run alsaconf to setup snd card. This shd work if snd card is supported. As root run lspci, lsusb to check videocard, sndcard, etc. Good luck.
