Can't watch video on Debian GNU/Linux

Hi everybody,

I am using Sarge on my Inspiron 5100 and everything works great, except one thing. I can not watch video on this laptop. I use to have Mandrake 10.1 and I use to watch video.

Where should I see the logs to see what is going wrong? What packages I need to install?

Totem and Kaffein just jung up when I run them.

Greetings

Have you installed the codecs to view video with?

MPlayer - The Movie Player

What kind of video? Like a DVD or a stream?
Post a link the media in question if on the web.

Other than that make sure you have the codecs installed.

Add the repo below to your sources.list and then
# apt-get install w32codecs

I can pop a DVD in and Totem plays it automatically.

Thanks for the replay :)

Too bad I would be away from my laptop until thursday, when I would try what you are suggesting.

About mplayer, I have already instales and it plays de video files such as: mpeg or avi, but with no audio. I try a VCD and the same thing. A DVD hang mplayer :(.

I also had the w32codecs installed, but no success.
