can't update

I'm just starting into the Debian world from MDK, I can't update anything with synaptic or even directly through apt no matter what I do I get this error

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 5764 package `pconf-detect':
missing version
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

any help would be great

Post the error of:

apt-get update

If that succeeds, try

apt-get dist-upgrade

APT HOWTO
Debian Package Management HOWTO Version 1.1
