can't start my LAN card in Mepis

i have an Intel 100+ Pro Network Management Adapter...

it was finely detected by Mepis..

I could run the internet with the Live Cd and till date everything was workin fine.

But i have ran into a problem recently..

there are two options at the networkin tab in MEpis OS center.

Mine requires the Static Ip settings.

so i entered the DNS server address in the lo interface and started it (worked fine)

now my main card is etho....
i entered the settings appropriately ...(confirmed for no mistake)
But my problem is that i can't start etho

why is that?

Moreover, when i tried to click on the button in the lo interface tab....
pppoe/isdn settings,,,(something like that)..

my computer freezed !

can anybody help me out?

Hmm... Debian doesn't see your netcard as etho, it's eth0 (ethZERO).

You can try to set your network configuration manually by editing /etc/network/interfaces. For static connection the interfaces file should contain something like this (just replace xxx with your netaddress numbers):

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet static
address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

You can also add your DNS into /etc/resolv.conf, like this:

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

After typing these two files you can reboot to see if this helped at all.

alright man.....

I knew it is eth0....that was just a typin mistake!

one more thing about the resolv.conf

see....i have got two DNS server addresses....

Primary DNS, and Alternate DNS.....

if i add first no. like this.

nameserver = primary dns no. (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

how should i add the alternate DNS?

You can just place it under the primary DNS, like this:

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

EDIT:
BTW, if this helps you to get a working net connection, you might want to install a package called etherconf. After installation you can run it from terminal window by simply typing (as root) etherconf. The configuration I've suggested here is very basic because I wanted to keep things simple but etherconf should give you a bit more sophisticated network configuration.

Alright, I will do that.

Is it to be done like

Code:
apt-get etherconf
Or I should add the Debian mirrors to the sources.list as well?
