Can't see /dev/psaux with Debian/sid
 
Hi,
I have used Debian/sid for the last month.
Last Saturday I did the `apt-get -u dist-upgrade' and I noted that it installed a `module-init'.
The problem is tha after I rebooted my PC I have these two problems:

a) launching startx it said to me that can't see the mouse at /dev/psaux
b) usually when my PCMCIA network card was initialized in the init process some beeps happened. Not the boot is mute. Also when I launch lbreakout I can't listen the music.

I waited for somedays in case this was fixed but as today I have to use an USB mouse to work... :(

As I said before last Saturday upgrade it all worked fine.
Also my mouse is fine because under WinNT4, I have dual-boot, it's working.

The music is something I can temporany live without but the mouse is a big problem because I have to use the USB port for my scanner.

I noticed that your mouse protocol is defined as "auto" in XF86Config. If you've got a PS/2 mouse, I suggest that you run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and change the mouse protocol to "ImPS/2" or "PS/2". Also change the mouse device to "/dev/input/mice" because this is what kernel 2.6 uses for PS/2 mice. Also add psmouse to /etc/modules so that the kernel module for your mouse is loaded during bootup and is ready when X starts.

You don't say if you're using ALSA or if you've got discover installed. If you've got both, then it's possible that ALSA and discover conflict. A workaround would be to tell discover to skip loading the module for your sound card so that the managing of your sound card is left to ALSA. Looking at your dmesg, it seems to me that linux kernel detects your sound card as ESS Maestro 2E and loads for it the module "maestro". It's quite possible that your sound problem is not the one I described above but there's no harm done if you test the correctness of my diagnose by adding "skip maestro" (without quotation marks) to /etc/discover.conf.

After these changes you can reboot and see if the problems are still there. Hope this helps, but no guarantees. :p

Yes!

Looking at the boot I saw that it appeared something about `hotpnplug' saying no pcspkr.
So then I added to /etc/modules pcspkr and now I can hear the beep at boot!

About the audio I never heard about Alsa, sorry I'm a newbie.
I installed it and launched alsaconf and now my audio is working.

REALLY REALLY a big thanks to you both!
