Can't (re)install (and find) webmin in Debian 5 using apt-get

Hello. I'm new here and very new to Debian.
I have a server with Debian 4 installed by anoter person and webmin was installed and running. I run a dist-upgrade to switch to Debian 5.

Upgrade completed successfully, as far as I know, except than Webmin stopped to work. Once logged in I got many error for modules/program not found. So I uninstalled webmin using "apt-get remove".

Now if I try to install it again apt-get tells me that (try to translate from Italian):

Quote:
Package webmin has not any version available, but is referred by another package. This means that package is missing, became obsolete or is available only from within another source.
E: package webmin has no installation candidates
I tried also with "apt-get install webmin-core" but get the same message with only this additional info:
Quote:
Anyway, these packages substitute it: webmin
Tried to run "apt-get update" and then "apt-cache search webmin" but it doesn't find anything.

Anyone could suggest me what to do?
Thank you

I guess you have to follow the instructions on http://www.webmin.com/deb.html

From the #debian irc: [webmin] a lame web-based interface for unsafe system administration for Unix. Check it out at http://webmin.com/ Remember, dondelelcaro *hates* webmin. "i'd rather sit on the floor shoving table knives into live electrical outlets than run webmin on an exposed server." See http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel.../msg00790.html about the removal. Don't use their .debs, they are of extremely poor quality.

You might try checking out eBox Platform

So, an eBox fan has an axe to grind with a dramatically more popular, and more capable, competitor. I don't know who dondelelcaro is or what his system administrator credentials are (or his relation to eBox), but Webmin has a quite good security history (over three years since the last serious exploit; though there have been a few XSS issues fixed in the past couple of years).

I'm one of the developers of Webmin. If you have any questions after following the installation instructions found at http://www.webmin.com let me know, and I'll try to help.

We'll be at OSCON this week, so if you happen to be in the neighborhood and want to drop by our booth (#326), we'll install Webmin for you personally, and setup your apt-get repository so it can get updates easily.

Regards,
Joe

deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib

Sarge was two releases ago at the very least you might want to change that to stable or lenny.

There haven't been webmin .deb packages in Debian's "official" repos since 2005.

In case your curious the webmin apt repo is in the sources.list I have put together:http://sites.google.com/site/mydebiansourceslist/

Thank you to all for replies.
I realized that webmin is not in repositories by default and if I want I can add the correct repo.

In the meanwhile i downloaded webmin again from the webmin website and installed it. And now it's working well again, as far i as see.

I've comprehended the objections about security. Currently my server is not public and it's accessible only from withing the LAN. So considerations about security are not a problem a the moment.
I will also take a look at eBox platform, anyway.

My regards
