can't install module !

hello
sometimes when i try to install woody , the installation program says that it can't install the module for the NIC ( even if it's the apropriate one ) this in the kernel module configuration step, in my case it's an rtl8139 , i had the same thing for an Interl pro 100 one , but sometimes it reconize the module it self !
can someone explain this to me please .

A lot of the modules are already in the kernel. Some network cards have 2 or more modules. The ones you try to install are alternatives to the ones you would get if you didnt try to install them.

Well its true of the intel nic anyway.

Wouldnt know about the rtl one though - they have a bad reputation so I never used them in any server. Perhaps they have the same thing going on. Could be worse could be a prism2 wireless lan card. I am sure there's about 3 modules too choose from. And I used to moan about lack of hardware support.

So thats why it recognised them anyway when debian rebooted and why choice is a confusing and bad thing in all things but puddings and beer.
