We're using Exchange 5.5 in our environment (yes I know it's a dinosaur, but our admins are being lazy about upgrading to E2k3) and I can't seem to get Evolution to connect to it.

I installed Evolution and the Evolution-Exchange package, ran the Evolution wizard (it automatically runs on startup) set all the settings (exchange server info, account info, and such), and when I open up, it asks for my password (which I vew as a normal thing), after I enter my password and tell it ok, it comes back with an error telling me there was a Network Error.

So I cancelled out of that and just have Evolution open and when I click on send/receive it does not ask for my password anymore but I get the following error:

Could not connect to Evolution Exchange backend process: No such file or directory.

Any thoughts or help will be greatly appreciated!

I have had this problem many times and its always wrong settings in some way.
That thing about the "could not connect to the backend process"-thing always seems to happen when you try out different settings and shutting down/starting evolution many times.
Just make sure to kill all all evolution processess before try out new settings, cause I have noticed that sometimes your new settings is not propagated right if you dont.
"eathereal" helped me once to figure out what was wrong (format of domain\user was wrong, I was giving domain\user but it wanted just user (Active Directory))
But I think that your problem comes to the exchange-username, thats the tricky part. Evolution doesnt use the "ordinary" exchangeuser that you specify in outlook. You have to find it out by starting the "exchange on the web"-service in your browser, hope that your work has it enabled, I think its usually located at "http://IP or host or FQDN/exchange", you can see your exchange user in the path or in the "view source" somewhere, it usually looks like user1234 or something like that, at least it does for me. I dont have any precise instructions but you can find more info on the web, at least you know what to search for now.

I had tried unsuccesfully many times to connect to our exchange server using the ximian connector and evolution.
Eventually I got all the settings correct. Unfortunately, I was only greeted with the message that my version of exchange was too old and ximian connector did not work with that version.

I believe it was the same version you are using - sorry.

You may want to google this as I cannot remember exactly which version I was using, but I do clearly remember that there were only 2 versions of exchange listed that did work and mine was not one of them.

Nothing has worked for me yet. I even tried setting up Evolution to use IMAP once I found out it was turned on, but even that has not done it. I can't really find anything concrete on whether Evolution will even work with Exchange 5.5. Argh! Makes me want to pull hairs out.

If anybody comes up with something please let me know.

evolution and the exchange connector need exchange 2000 to work, it also needs to have outlook web mail turned on (i think it is the OWA piece of exchange 2000)
