Can't find cdrw or dvdrom drives

Could someone tell me how to make my system rediscover the cdrw drive and dvdrom drive?

Both drives are listed in the fstab file.

I am using Debian Lenny/Sid, 2.6.18-4 kernel.

I would like a simple way to troubleshoot why my computer won't mount either drive.

When I attempt to mount the cd drive with "mount /media/cdrom", it tells me that 'special device /dev/hdc does not exist'.

And I am pretty sure that it does. I've tried some google, but I wanted to post this here to get some expert help, too.

Thanks,

1. Is the drive still connected to the second IDE port as master? 'Cause that's what you tell it: hda is master in first IDE port, hdb is slave on same, hdc is master on 2nd IDE port, hdd is slave on latter.
2. For some reason the kernel may see the drive as an SCSI device. Try sda or sdc in the fstab file.
