I think OP was looking for a recommendation since as you demonstrated, there are a lot of programs out there. The hard part is choosing one that does what you want it to do.

I would also like to setup a SMS server but with TCP since we don't have a land line at the house. I gave up looking at the google hits since I can' interpret most of the technical terms.

Yep, I've stopped to search by uncle google and I will be really happy for any recommendation.
Perhaps someone has already a sms gateway based on linux give me some helpful advice?
BTW we would like to build our own sms gateway just to send sms messages and not to receive over the browser interface (intranet) as an additional service at our company.

One of the advantages of Linux is that it's free, i.e. you can choose what application to use at no further cost. That makes it easy to try all kinds of those applications to find the one you're most happy/comfortable with. Yes, that requires so homework on your part, but as you're the one using it, that's kinda mandatory, isn't it?

One of the links on the Google page is kannel. It so happens it has Debian packages, be it a slightly older version (1.3 vs 1.4 current). That would be the easiest option. As for commercial deployment, that's explicitly prohibited by most (all?) of these programs, so you'd be looking at obtaining a licence.
