bf2.4 install problem

After multiple attempts at installation i still recieve the same problem. X wont start up, and I get the following error when i try "startx"

(WW) ATI: PCI/AGP Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected
(EE) No Devices detected

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

Is x not recognizing my video card? Its a radeon 7500 and during x setup i selected "ATI" for the video drivers. I also ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and changed my monitor setting to lower resolution and lower refresh rate but it still doesnt work.

Athlon xp2000+
Gigabyte mobo
Maxtor 80gig hdd
512mb ram

Looks like this is the wrong driver. Try to find another one, ore use the ATI drivers from their homepage instead.

Also you should look for a line with

# BusID "PCI:0:10:0"

inside /etc/X11/XF86Config. If it is not commented out, it's possible that the driver is search at the wrong place for the card.
