Hi all. I wanna use beryl but im afraid if i use apt-get i wont be able to use the plugins that are on their site. So is there a regular way to install it with out having to use apt-get install ? Thanx in advance!
Plugins are just that: some lines of code that alter the looks or behavior of an app designed for them on the fly. Just use apt to get Beryl installed and get the plugins later from their site.
Look at it this way: the electrics in your house is just a framework to distribute electricity. What that electricity does depends on the device you plug in: vacuum-cleaner, micro-wave, computer, TV set. They all have different properties for different tasks. So do plugins in software: the app itself is a framework for you to alter to your hearts content
And installing anything on a Debian(-like) operating system is probably best done trough the package manager (apt) anyway, rather than by other means, because that way the packages are easy to remove if they aren't needed anymore. Using other means of installation usually makes it more difficult to track changes and remove installed files, unless the installation is done into one known directory which can afterwards be safely removed (and that is hardly ever the case nowadays).
Are you sure you mean exactly Beryl, and not the newer Compiz-Fusion? Beryl and Compiz projects did a "fusion" some time ago, and today the 3d desktop effects are provided by Compiz-Fusion rather than Compiz or Beryl..though if you want to use the Emerald decorations, they still do work, though they seem (or seemed to me) to be connected to Beryl rather than Compiz-Fusion..
