Beagle doesn't index Word docs, Recoll

I'm running a fresh install of Etch. I installed Beagle but I find that it does not index my Word docs. I installed the "wv" package but even then its not indexing it. I read a blog somewhere thatversion 2.12 of Beagle included with Etch does not index Word docs, rtf, ppt etc. Is this true? Is there any way to get Beagle working smoothly and perfectly?

I've heard a lot about Recoll and would like to try it but its in testing. I don't wanna break anything would it be safe if i install the recoll testing package?? I don't really wanna mix trees so is there any other way? And will I run into any problems for installing recoll testing on etch?

Please let me know. How to get Beagle working. And how to install Recoll safely.

Thanks for your time.
