bash: startx: command not found

I downloaded Debian 3.1 (Sarge) from linuxiso.org and I can't seem to boot into the GUI. It gives me a bash: startx: command not found I don't know where I went wrong.

This is what I encountered throughout the Debian install:

-When it was installing apt, I chose 'cdrom' for the location and it said to insert the Debian disk, so I did. It then scanned and I guess it didn't find what it was looking for and it then asked for the other Debian disk. I inserted the 2nd Debian disk and it still didn't find it. I resumed without that part and it told me that the security fixes would need to be manually applied.

-I chose the 'Desktop' option when I was the package installation section

Any ideas why I can't boot into the GUI?

EDIT: I've been searching around before I posted this and after I posted it I came across an interested post on a forum saying you actually need to hit the spacebar when selecting an option, not just highlight it. Stupid me. sorry about that guys

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/s...ting&arch=i386
You have searched for startx in testing, architecture i386.
Found 2 matching files/directories, displaying files/directories 1 to 2.
FILE PACKAGE

usr/bin/startx
x11/xbase-clients
that xbase-clients is the deb you are missing

Is that where apt or apt-cache or whatever is making its database? It needs to know what programs you have available. So shove in all the CDs you've got?

bene223,

I assume that your edit of the first post means you solved your issue (i.e. x wasn't installed properly because you forgot to hit spacebar)?

If you haven't reinstalled, you can just apt-get install x-window-system gdm gnome (or install xdm or kdm and whatever desktop/window manager you want). Or you can reinstall. Whatever...
