autofs in sid doesn't work!

I've the full support of "autofs" in my 2.6.10ac2 kernel compiled in on sid. I've installed autofs tools and configured with their configurations files in the right way but autofs doesn't mount my usb disk drive when i attach it.
Anyone know why?

Autofs sucks for hardware devices, but works perfectly for nfs shares. Mounting should work still, it's umounting which doesn't work well.

You do need te browse into the mountpoint before any mounting will happen (a stupid remark, but perhaps you didn't do this ).

i have a top level directory for various autofs mountpoints in /autofs. i know that all the mountpoint are created when the device is attached.
Anyway in general i would like to use the "removable device automount" option of gnome 2.8 but i don't know how to get it works.
