Auto spell checking in iceweasel and icedove

The auto spell checking in these 2 programs have stopped working within the last few days. I am guessing that some new updates might have messed it up? Anyone else notice this? I got the spell checking working but I had to download the xpi plugin files for firefox. I have never had to do that before.

Ok I just checked and I have ispell installed and dictionaries-common.

I see there is also aspell and myspell. Would these work with firefox and be better than the FF spell checker xpi plugin? But I still don't know why it stopped working to begin with? FF doens't come with any plugins installed stock right? So it must have been using something else that was installed in the OS? So what is it?
