auto remove suggests and recommends

I would like to automatically remove all the suggests and recommends from an existing debian installation as well as prevent them from loading during aptitude updates.

For the second part of your question, add these to /etc/apt/apt.conf (you may have to create the file first)
Code:
$ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
APT::Install-Suggests "0";
APT::Install-Recommends "0";

Thanks for the second part but I want to autoremove the existing recommends/suggests as well.

Thank you Jim_P for that information but I am still looking for a method to automatically remove installed recommends and suggests.

The information you provided was very helpful in preventing recommends and suggests from installing but I have a load of them already installed which I would like to remove
