If you use gnome:
Login window preferences => security => allow local system administrator login

Hi
thanks but I need auto login. I've tried on the same tab allow automaic login, but you can't select root. I've also tried to set gdmconf to allow auto root, but it will only work on users, not root.

You could create a user and add him to the root group.
Never tried it though
Or type the root password :-)

Hi
I don't know how to adduser with root priverlages.

I can't type as it's on an embedded board, that's why I need the auto login to gnome :s

If anyone can tell me how to use adduser with root priverlages that would help

mh, to add a user to group root would be
Quote:
# addgroup user root
but it doesnt support him with all privileges (as an fdisk -l gave me: command not found)
---
you could also add the user to the visudoers and give him all privileges, if thats sufficient for your needs:

Code:
# visudo
and add:
Code:
user_name ALL=(ALL) ALL
well: its kinda harakiri..., check for any docu on sudo, im not a sudoer.
----
another way is you could check if changing /etc/inittab may give you a hand:
change the lines containing this:
Code:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
...
to something like this:
Code:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 </dev/tty1 >/dev/tty1 2>&1
2:23:respawn:/bin/login -f jalu </dev/tty2 >/dev/tty2 2>&1
3:23:respawn:/bin/login -f jalu </dev/tty2 >/dev/tty2 2>&1>&1
...
and replace the username <jalu> by root.

in this case i would, first of all, remove gdm (in case it gives you trouble to login as root). Ther doesnt seem to be a big need for a login-manager if one wants to autologin, i think.

its just some ideas, i never make use of autologin or sudo. You might wanna look for a docu of sudo/visudo or check how the entries for a autologin-live-cd in /etc/initab is.

good luck

Hi thanks,
I tried to use the adduser root, but some privileges were still hidden :s

I'll give the part at the end at try thought.

I used to use no GDM, however in lenny (new gnome) you get the "are you sure you want to run as root" yes no, if no answer is give it doesn't auto start my software.
