Auto-configuring PCMCIA NIC doesn't work on bootup
Hi all -
I have been trying all afternoon to get this working. Basically, the problem is that a I have an Orinoco PCMCIA NIC in a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, running Debian testing, which I simply cannot get to configure correctly at boot time. It comes up, but not with the correct essid, bit rate, or nickname, and without an encryption key - iwconfig tells me it's set up with essid "linksys" and nickname "HERMES I", bit rate 1Mb/s, no encryption.
I wrote a script to configure it (correctly) manually (using iwconfig) after bootup, but I shouldn't have to do it that way.
I have the following in /etc/network/interfaces:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
allow-hotplug eth2
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
mapping hotplug
script grep
map eth2
# The wired network interface (not brought up automatically)
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
# Wireless card
iface eth2 inet static
address 192.168.1.25
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
wireless-essid xxxxxxx
wireless-mode Managed
wireless-nick c3po-wifi
wireless-enc [1] xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx restricted
Interface eth0 is the wired NIC, which I rarely use on this machine; eth1 gets assigned to a Firewire plug, which I don't use for networking purposes.
I do still have stuff in /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts, though I gather through numerous Google searches that it's ignored if using /etc/network/interfaces to bring up the NIC.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to do to get this configured correctly at boot time?
TIA - Bob
