Hello All,

I have been struggling with this issue for at least two months.

I am trying to get Open GL working on my HD 7750 (Cape Verde) card and Debian Jessie.
The purpose of this is to play flightgear. Currently it runs at less than 1fps. (Which suggests OpenGL is working, just not hardware acceleration).

Today I installed Jessie (clean install), I am currently using the "radeon" open source driver. I understand the FGLRX driver does not work with Gnome (as per : https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprieta..._Catalyst_14.9

The radeon driver feature matrix suggests I should have OpenGL 3.3 support (if I have LLVM 3.5 installed (I sure do)).

I suspect the radeon driver isn't firing up the GPU properly as per line : 8.358309.

Questions :
  • Should the open source radeon driver deliver hardware accelerated graphics as per it's feature matrix ?
  • If it should how can I acheive full 3d hardware acceleration on my computer?
  • Does anyone know what causes the ring test failures?
  • If I go to the fglrx driver will it work with KDE instead of Gnome?
  • Should I just buy another video card ? What works well (that's cheap from ebay) with open source drivers ? I need full 3d support.

You're running on llvmpipe which suggests you either are trying to run X without an xorg.conf file or your running the modesetting driver. Either way your X isn't configured properly and missing things.

Try creating an xorg.conf file with the "radeon" driver and load the Radeon HD 7750 non-free firmware. Because you're gaming you may want to see about adding in s3tc support via libtxc_dxtn if Debian has a package for it. DRIConf will be useful also.

Do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file you can post or files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d you can post as well so we can see how you're set up?

Yeah, most likely you're just missing the firmware-linux-nonfree package, which contains the binary-blob-part of the opensource driver (yup, binary blob in opensource driver!). Debian is like that.

Only if this doesn't help i would delve into some more advanced configuration like xorg.conf.

The binary firmware will only partially help sometimes. Unless X is told what driver and modules to load and use, often X will default to the modesetting driver regardless of what hardware actually is in the system. That's the flaw of automation sadly.

My /var/log/Xorg.0.log indicates this is the file it's using.

In other news, when I cold-booted this system earlier it seemed to show signs of running the Cape Verdie driver. However there were artifacts. This is making me wonder if it's a hardware issue. I have tried re-seating the card many times, with no sucess.
Will keep trying. This seems to fit with the "ring_test" failure in my dmesg:

Hello,

After much more tinkering I have decided this must be a hardware issue.

I have to rip the card out and completely reseat it, then it will fire up the GPU about 50 of the time. I can tell because I don't get the "[drm:r600_ring_test] *ERROR* radeon: ring 0 test failed (scratch(0x850C)=0xCAFEDEAD)" error at boot up and some desktop eye-candy works, until the system crashes (not a kernel panic, just a hard and complete freeze.)

If I got to the bottom of this "ring 0 test failure" was perhaps I could fix it. I am suspecting a bung power supply.

Thoughts ?

Hello,

After some more tinkering I have discovered a pattern:

It's somehow related to how much RAM I have in the computer.
Tested Configs :
2 Gig - Perfect. Full GPU & runs my game fine.
3 Gig - Also Perfect.
4 Gig - no go.

I have even played with my memory settings (different timings) in the hope that I might find a setting that works with 4 Gig of RAM. No go.

I'm now investigating updating the motherboard BIOS to see if that helps. (There has been 20 bios updates since the board was released).

A ring 0 error deals with the kernel. Try running a newer stable or mainline kernel than what you have. What kernel are you using ATM?

Hello,

I think I have it nailed at a 4-Gig ram / motherboard issue.

On the weekend I shall try to upgrade my BIOS and see if I can then run 4 Gig of memory.
The last couple of days I've had it running perfectly on 3Gigs, with no software changes.

It's a 64-Bit machine.

Try the 3 gigs again & see if it works, if its 64-bit machine you shouldn't have to upgrade bios it maybe a problem with the new ram.

Well I have certainly tested the machine.
Things are stable at 3Gig. No crashes or strange error messages.

However I can only get about 3-4 FPS out of flightgear.

Has anyone else ran flightgear on this video card ? (HD 7750 Radeon) ?
