ATI fglrx drivers suddenly stop working

My fglrx drivers suddenly stopped working. I don't know what did it. I didn't install anything new and I didn't change any settings. I was just running a program that used OpenGL. Then, I closed it. Next thing I know, my fglrxinfo is showing:

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.2)

Of course it shouldn't be that. It should say some junk about fglrx.

Sorry to be posting such a (probably) newbie-ish sounding question, but does anyone have any pointers about where I should start fixing this? I've tried reinstalling the drivers and that didn't do anything.

I fixed it by reinstalling the drivers, disabling options in xorg.conf, and using module-assistant to make a new kernel module for fglrx. I still don't know what went wrong. That is really the more troubling part.
