Ati drivers problem
 

Hello folks!

I have problems with my ati hd 5450 graphic card driver installation. The problem is that my picture lags when i resize window or try to move window through my desktop etc... with ati proprietary drivers.

One more example. I have installed google-chrome and firefox. When I watch movie clips with chrome on youtube it is ok with open-source drivers (radeon) or with ati proprietary drivers. When I lunch firefox and open some movie picture starts to lag.

I tryed to install ati drivers from official debian repository and from ati official web page.

I followed couple tutorials just to be sure that everything is ok.

Manual installation:

1. Downloaded gcc, make, linux-headers
2. unpack ati drivers
3. run sh amd-* command

after installation was finished I reboot my computer and check if flgrx module is running. That was ok, but picture still lags.

Can anyone guide me how to properly install drivers for my card or tell me why picture lags?

Well... Problem with firefox was in plugin. I downloaded latest flash plugin from adobe and now it works ok. In all this mess I totally forgot about it.

I also installed Ati drivers from official repository and it works too.

After testing a little bit more i found that with open-drivers (radeon) there is no lag while watchin video, resizing windows etc... When I install proprietary driver (fglrx) I can watch video (720p) on youtube without lags but then my applications starts to lag.

This is the output of fglrxinfo command:

When I run fgl_glxgears I get around 720 fps.

Should I stick with open-source driver or is there any solution for this??

Do you have compositing enabled on your desktop/wm? Fglrx and compositing is a sad story...
And which debian branch are you on? If you are on stable, both radeon and fglrx are too old for your card.

Plus, when you are on fglrx, make sure you boot your kernel with the "nomodeset" parameter. Do NOT use it if you are on radeon.

I don't have compositing enabled.
I am using Debian/stable (squeeze) + LXDE

I just tried to set "nomodeset" parameter but nothing changed. Picture still lags.

I also removed xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon drivers and checked in /etc/modprobe.d that radeon is blacklisted.

As i said, your card is too new for the fglrx and radeon versions the main repo has, so the system is probably "malfunctioning" using them. Either install some newer version from the backports repo or move to testing/unstable.

Ok! I'll try to download new driver from www.X.org and try to compail it and make it work or I will stick with radeon driver from stable repository.
