ATI card with Beryl or Compiz

Just installed Debian Etch and I'm looking at putting either Compiz or Beryl on my desktop. I'm using a Connect3d ATI X800 (R423) and have the proprietary driver fglrx working.(I can run with the "radeon" driver, but for some reason I do not have direct rendering when I do) My question is mainly which one of these systems works best for ATI cards? (Or my card specifically, if anyone has experience with x800's?)

I've seen numerous guides that tend to pair XGL with Beryl and AIGLX with Compiz, and I've also read that AIGLX doesn't work with ATI? My first attempt was with an automated script installed Compiz, and that just ended in my gdm sitting with a busy mouse and nothing loading constantly, so I reinstalled this morning. Now I'm thinking about giving XGL/Beryl a try, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding configuration info for ATI cards, particularly what needs to be added to xorg.conf.

Of course Compiz is in the repositories, but XGL and Beryl seem not to be unless there are other secondary repositories I can add to my list. And I have little to no knowledge of AIGLX.

If I install Compiz from the package manager and try to run it I get an assortment of errors. Performing a compiz --replace with compiz loaded and no XGL/AIGLX just causes all my windows to flash, the borders to vanish, and for them to be locked in place, forcing me to go to terminal and restart gdm.

Not sure what steps I should take next, would like to hear recommendations from people who've gotten this to work.

ATI proprietary drivers do not support compiz / beryl.

please....

of course it does. The driver just doesn't support aiglx, you have to use xgl.
